Partner? I Am Not A Partner!

Sod them and their politically correct, libertarian world. I am not having
my life-long, legally recognised commitment to my wife reduced to a
piece of business jargon commandeered to make shacking up together
sound more respectable.

  1. I don’t know about the UK, Johnathan, but a marital commitment is between two adult persons and is not very different from a commercial arrangement sealed with a handshake. If the arrangement is entered into the public records and there is an expectation of public recongition (when children are enrolled in school or one person is in hospital and needs to be represented by the other), then the private relationship takes on a public role. Moreover, because people looking out for each other is a social positive, we actually reward such commitments (at least in the U.S.) with financial advantages. Which makes the domestic arrangement very like a partnership.
Now, you may see yourself as exercising dominion over a household, but we do not honor that.
