Passing Thoughts Of A Mad Priest

Although I personally find capital punishment a barbarous practice, I can understand its simple, eye for an eye, logic. What is completely beyond my comprehension is how a nation that purports to be civilised can justify locking a murderer up for nearly thirty years and then executing him. That is not an eye for an eye, it is more like a head or even a whole body for an eye as the punishment is far in excess of and far crueller than the crime.

  1. The object of torturing people for a long time and then putting them to death is to demonstrate the supreme power of the state and deter the rest of the population from engaging in behavior similar to the miscreant’s. It assumes that people are dissuaded from action by the experience of others. In fact there is no evidence that many even learn from their own experience. But, it makes importent people feel powerful.
