A Plague (Metaphorically Speaking) On Both Their Houses

Larycia Hawkins, a professor at Wheaton College (a private evangelical school near Chicago) has been placed on administrative leave after she started wearing a head scarf to counter what she called the "vitriolic" rhetoric against Muslims in recent weeks. She is also in trouble for making comparisons between Islam and Christianity on social media.

It strikes me that her employer's reaction to her propensity for free thinking is somewhat proving her point. When it comes to being fascist and mind-controlling, fundamentalist Christianity is exactly the same as fundamentalist Islam.

  1. Wheaton, FWIW, says it wasn’t the hijab. Re “She is also in trouble for making comparisons between Islam and Christianity on social media.” She had framed it, “As Pope Francis Says, Christians and Muslims worship the same God.” Does anyone think that Wheaton would go after Papa Frank the way they did this oh-she-just-happens-to-be-a-black-woman professor?

[IMO, while I may not be thrilled w/ some sloppy syncretisms, inc Christian-Muslim, few things chap my @rse as much as Christianists who insist that Muslims worship an absolutely separate, either false/non-existant/demonic god called “Allah”. Yeah, Muslims make mutually-exclusive faith-claims about the unitary vs trinitary explanations of the Divine. Best guess? We’re BOTH wrong! (or ALL wrong, when applied to EVERY human belief system, including atheism). Criminey, I’m sick of the effing certitude!]
