Bible Bashing Paradox

If evangelicalism is, in part, about a personal relationship with God not dependant on the actions of the clergy and the church as an institution, why are those who adhere to it so committed to the judging of others and eager to excommunicate from the institution of the church those whose personal experiences of God lead them to understand God differently to how God is described by the rigid, impersonal dogmas of the majority of evangelical clergy?
