MADPRIEST DIGS . . .

When I saw this album cover I very nearly passed it by. I assumed it was some home recording by a talentless teenager whose boyfriend had told her she could sing just to get inside her pants.

What a fool I would have been. Sam Roark is the most talented new country singer I have heard in a long, long time. She is a delight to listen to and her choice of songs is perfect for her voice. On checking her website I see that she is already making inroads into the Nashville charts and I'm not surprised.

She also, although still very young, has a tale to tell that explains her natural affinity with country music.

  1. Wow! Sam is good! The album is well-produced; the accompanying musicians are talented; and the songs are well-chosen. I confess that I was dubious even after your high praise, MadPriest, but you’re right about Sam.

  2. I think we have a similar radar when it comes to recognising talent, Mimi. I have a sneakin’ suspicion that my real vocation in life was to be a talent spotter for a record company (we call it A&R). At least, I’ve realised one dream in a way. Podcasting has allowed me to pretend I’m a deejay even if you are my only listener 🙂

  3. If you don’t mind, I’m going to pass this one by. Even though both of my parents liked country music and listened to it occasionally around me, I have never been able to develop an appreciation for it. I listened to a few seconds of it just to hear her voice, which is all right, and that’s enough for me.

Sorry, but…ugh. It’s country. That’s all I need to know.

  4. Hurray! We have a hit on our hands.

Except, of course, for Our Trace, who is from Florida and so probably listens to AOR and soft jazz all day 🙂

  5. I’m with Mimi, Ellie and you on this one! Great choice. For once I can listen to something you’ve chosen without hitting “stop,” No wonder no days off purgatory on this one. It’s heaven.

  6. Thank you all for the kind comments. I am Sam’s uncle and her single ” The Sound Of A Woman Saying Goodbye ” climbed to No. 2 on Nashville’s New Music Weekly Indies Top 30 Country Chart and No. 9 on their Top 40 Main Country Chart before falling off at the end of March. Her next single ” Check Out Girl ” the title song from the album will be released sometime in May and they expect it to do well also. She had a great producer in the legendary Joe Sun and some of the best writers and musicians and sound engineers in Nashville. Sam is a 20 year old country girl from the mountains of Southeast KY and has overcome a serious drug problem with her Christain faith and help from a special program called Drug Court and has been in it for over 15 months whitout a flaw and will be graduating at the end of this July. Thanks again.

  7. Thank you, Robert. I too was pleased to have had such a positive reaction from my readers. The last young person I came across with anywhere near Sam’s talent was Amber Rigby and, if anything, Sam has a more powerful voice. She reminds me so much of the great women singers of real country music from the 1960s and earlier. Please, do not let her get too mainstream, and if she has to in order to earn her living, make sure she regularly releases some rootsy albums as well.

By the way, the English and Scottish fans will love her to bits. If she ever gets the chance to come over here she would go down a storm. I suggest you make sure the European stations and country press are fully aware of her, especially now it is so easy to download music from anywhere in the world through Amazon and the like.

  8. Thanks again Mad Priest for the kind comments about Sam and we will certainly take your advice and try to get her music played in all the locations you mentioned and hopefully one day she can perform there. Also I forgot to mention that she has a wonderful promoter as well, Mr. Bill Wence.
