I think this must be a spoof like "Newsbiscuit." But it's difficult to tell as the Fifth Columnists are funny anyway, like Harry Enfield doing a skit on pompous, 1950s misogynists.

  1. That is hysterical – thanks, MP, I needed the giggle. How long do you give it before they sink without trace?

  2. I know enough about the Establishment to be able to state that they are definitely already an irrelevance.

And I know enough about the departing bishops to state that he already knows that.

  3. Well good luck to them, I hope it brings them much joy. It is interesting to see how clerically oriented the publication is – no pictures of laypeople and precious little mention in the text either, not that they ever really seemed anything more than meat in the room for many modern anglo-catholic clergy.

  4. It’s a remarkably unattractively designed publication. In fact the whole look of it is inept. Still, I suppose that’s the least of it. Although it probably does say something.

  5. I was struck by Burnham’s statement: “But I am now laying aside my bishopric. Self-emptying (kenosis) is hard.”

His statement appears to be consciously based on Phillipians 2:5-8: “Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death — even death on a cross.”

I find his belief that the two situations are equivalent to be rather astonishing.

  6. The cover of the publication is worth the price of a subscription for its fine demonstration of the pope’s humility.

Oh wait! A peep through the Portal is free.

  7. These days you most commonly hear the word “portal” in sci-fi movies and TV shows like Doctor Who. It is usually how the evil alien baddies seeking world domination make their entrance.

  8. Some of you may have noted that The Portal got a little coverage this morning on the Episcopal Cafe’s The Lead. To which Joseph Kizziah commented: “Looking at the cover photo, I am having flashbacks of visiting the mall about a month ago and seeing a chair much like that one, occupied by a visitor from the North Pole.” Copied without any permission from Mr. Kizziah, for which I heartily apologize. but it just seemed too good not to repeat.

On the other hand, if you can stand to make your way back to the back pages of this illustrious new publication, you will find a nice little article about Charles Gore, not at all snarky as one might expect, since Bishop Gore would not have touched something like the Ordinariate with a very long pole. I have several of Bp. Gore’s books. But I didn’t realize he was so spooky looking.

  9. I haven’t been nice, I have done me best to carry on with your loo metaphor, as seems only right. WSJM, however, is a man of tact and delicacy.

  10. All signs point to the infamous Fr Ed Tomlinson of the St Barnabas blog as being the anonymous columnist ‘Snapdragon’ in the Portaloo – he has twice refused to post comments on his blog which point to this being so. Make of that what you will.
