In the U.S.A. on Independence Day the people celebrate America, the land of the free, where all people are equal and absolutely anybody can rise from the lowest depths of poverty to become the nation's president or even the C.E.O. of a multinational company.
In England, on Saint George's Day, we celebrate a knight in shining armour who
single-handedly killed a fire-breathing dragon to rescue a beautiful princess.
There is slightly more historical truth in the second of the two national myths.
