Most of what is sold as Irish folk music is as authentic as the Mozzarella Dominoes puts on its pizza. What this man is playing is real Irish folk music. You will notice that it is more similar to the folk music of the rest of the British Isles and further afield. This is because it was not written and is not being played for political reasons or to boost the tourist industry or to give the blatant and inherent racism of a certain section of the American population a superficial gloss of acceptability (re Dropkick Murphies and the like). It is six and a half minutes of virtuosity of the highest order. Mr Deegan has a new album out entitled “an phíb.” However, this recording is from back in 2005.
