Coincidence or divine synchronicity? The release of the Church of England’s Faith and Order Commission’s report entitled “Men and Women in Marriage” in the same week that Margaret Thatcher died certainly emphasises that just as there are two Englands, there are also two Church of Englands. It has always been so and I expect it always will be. What is more it is the same in every nation, religion and culture because, as scientific research keeps showing, there are two distinct types of human beings, reactionaries and progressives (or however you want to define them). How life is at any particular time, in politics, in religion, in society in general, is all down to whether there are more reactionaries or more progressives in positions of power. There is a third type of human being, those who really don’t care enough about anything to get worked up about anything. These people will change their minds over time which is something real progressives and reactionaries will never do. However, because they have better things to do, like watch “Eastenders,” go to football matches, decorate their houses, holiday in Ibiza and get drunk, this third type of homo sapiens never, ever find themselves in positions of power. Politics and religion is nothing more than progressives and reactionaries fighting to get these floating voters into their camp (although “camp” would not be the reactionaries’ favoured description of themselves).
