HOMOPHOBIA FINANCED BY STATE

From CTV NEWS:

The federal government of Canada has denounced virulent homophobia in Uganda and its Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, has condemned plans for an anti-gay bill that could potentially include the death penalty for homosexuals. But at the same time the government is providing $544,813 in funding for Crossroads Christian Communications, an Ontario-based evangelical group, to help dig wells, build latrines and promote hygiene awareness in Uganda through 2014. Until Tuesday, the organization's website carried a list of "sexual sins" deemed to be "perversion": "Turning from the true and/or proper purpose of sexual intercourse; misusing or abusing it, such as in pedophilia, homosexuality and lesbianism, sadism, masochism, transvestism, and bestiality."

Yikes! Canadians being hypocritical! Who's have thought it possible? The next thing you know they'll be going on about how bad global warming is whilst systematically destroying the environment with oil shale extraction in their own country and digging up whole mountains in Mexico.

HOMOPHOBIA FINANCED BY STATE — 11 Comments

  1. Actually homophobia is not being financed by the State, and I’m surprised you fell for that bit of sensational journalism. What is being financed by the State is wells, latrines, and hygiene awareness.

    • We do have the example of US evangelical agencies working in Africa to inform us. There is a lot of evidence that points to such agencies being responsible for the inflaming of existing prejudices in countries such as Uganda. Let’s face it, it is extremely rare for any evangelical charity to give without having conversion to their way of thinking as their real goal. They wouldn’t be evangelical if they were merely altruistic.

  2. Tim:

Crossroads has a sorry history of very public opposition to GLBT issues.

It’s going to take more than back peddling to convince this evangelical otherwise.

It’s Your Call violated Canadian Broadcast Standards last year – I can assure you ignorance is alive and well at the Burlington behemoth.
Crossroads hired Jerry Johnston as 100 Huntley host, he has a sorry record as a religious right activist in Kansas.

This is from a Crossroads exec:

…they had intended to remove the webpage on “sexual sins” several months ago and have now done so…
…we believe that it was outdated in tone and message. Culturally in the last five to ten years we’ve seen a very different dialogue shaped around same-sex attraction and many other things in culture and we always want to make sure that those resources are not hurtful.”

What Crossroads said was ignorant, they have received 35 million dollars from CIDA over the past 10 years.

There are plenty of healthy parachurch, denominations and charities that can do the development work Crossroads does.

Let Crossroad donors fund the latrine building and leave taxpayer money out of it.

Crossroads is not losing it’s funding btw.

While I agree the coverage has been sensationalized, (on all sides) Crossroads tends to shoot themselves in the foot without any help from weekend media.

    • If my memory serves me well, Tim traditionally fasts from commenting on the internet during Lent. So we can say what we like about him for the next few weeks. He’ll have forgotten any offence by Easter.
