MEAN OR JUST PLAIN SENSIBLE?

From WNDU16:

A new study from the University of Notre Dame asked the question, ‘just how generous are Catholics?’ The answer: not as generous as other Christian denominations in America. The study suggests a “giving gap” between Catholics and other Christians, as well as a lack of spiritual engagement with money.

According to Starks, the study is not intended to say that Catholics are ungenerous, but simply that, on average, many Catholics do not connect money to personal or spiritual growth. He also says that the Catholic Church could have much more potential, but sometimes fails because of a lack of monetary donations.

Phew! Thank goodness for miserly Catholics.

  1. “…on average, many Catholics to not connect money to personal or spiritual growth.”

Huh…so ‘not storing treasures on earth’, camels/needles, the love of money being the root of all evil….all of that had an effect?

As a general rule (and, yes, there are some spectacular counter examples), Prosperity Theology is principally a protestant and pentacostal movement which has little currency within the bounds of catholicism, whether it is of the Roman, Anglican or Eastern flavour.

    • I don’t think this has anything to do with Protestant or Catholic theology. If the researchers had questioned Church of England members I think they would have found them just as penny pinching as American Catholics. I think it is to do with the fact that the hierarchy of both the C of E and the RC churches continue to provide people with a service even if the people don’t pay for it. In England, Baptist churches only get a minister if they can afford to pay for one. Therefore, Baptists are more generous than Anglicans in my country.

If everybody who downloaded my service sent me just 50 pence every time they did so, I would have enough money to live on. But I don’t insist they do, so the vast majority of them don’t. I should have converted to the Baptist faith.

  2. Are they specifically talking about giving TO the church (denom), or FROM it?

If “to”, then it would be crazy NOT consider that RCs are specifically boycotting giving to their Vatican kapos.
