A QUESTION FOR ROWANWHILST HE’S STILL AROUND

I need some clarification regarding this covenant thingy. If it goes through will we be defrocking all the existing women in holy orders or will we be demoting to the second tier of membership all those parts of the Anglican Communion that do not allow the ordination of women at present? And if the answer is neither because female ordination is already a done deal and received by the laity in some provinces will the argument regarding the ordination of gay people, especially to the episcopate, be completely off the table as it is already a done deal and received by the laity in some provinces.

I need this cleared up as the wording of the covenant as it stands could result in the Anglican churches being open to accusations of being illogically selective and, if I dare say it, a bit hypocritical.

  1. Yes. That’s how it’s worded and yes, many of the Churches in the AC are illogically selective and hypocritical.

  2. The Lutherans are having this same problem with women clergy; the Latvian lutherans used to ordain women when they were part of the USSR but now their new archbishop says it’s heretical and he won’t ordain any more women. The ELCA doesn’t know what to do about this except pretend he’s not there and wait for another archbishop.
Maybe that’s what you should do-pretend nothing’s the matter and carry on and wait for better times?

I think we Anglicans have been doing this w/ the (various occupants of the See of the) Bishop of Rome for about 500 years…
