HOW THE HOUSE OF BISHOPS AVOIDEDA POSSIBLE MAJOR EMBARRASSMENTFOR THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY — 6 Comments

  1. You’re assuming that the sexuality debate will grow up and become sensible.
In reality, the situation for gay priests has got steadily worse since JJ was first appointed Bishop of Reading in 2003 and I don’t for a minute think that they’re planning to allow civil partnered bishops in 2013.
That it might upset Covenant partners and is therefore not in the interest of the CoE will be an added bonus.

  2. You know, Erika, I’m not so certain that General Synod would vote against the right of gay people to become bishops. The Covenant is an abstract thing. Voting for continued bigotry against people you know, like and respect who are sitting in the same room as you is a different matter. I honestly think that Williams doesn’t want to test my theory and has deliberately pushed the debate until after the Covenant vote as he thinks he will win it. Then he can blame everyone else in the Communion for not being allowed to ordain gay people to the episcopacy.

  3. MP,
I don’t believe bishops are all stupid.
They know the Covenant arose from the gay issue and is intrinsically about that.
If they all vote for it now, they’re all happy to have their hands tied in the future.
