POLY STYRENE DIES AND GOES TO HEAVEN

"We can confirm that the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places." (Twitter)

A scene from the life of a mad priest:

30th. April 1978. Victoria Park, London.
100000 people, young/old, black/white, gay/straight.

X-Ray Spex walk on stage.

Poly giggles and says, "Some people say little girls should be seen but not heard."

Then she screams, "But I say, O bondage, up yours!!!!"

Then the greatest saxophone intro of all time and the rest, as they say, is history.

  1. I feel it MP. Here’s what I wrote on Facebook about her death.

“[I am] rather upset to hear of the death of Poly Sytrene. If there was anyone that inspired my informed stand offish attitude, it was Poly with her intelligent, funny & acerbic lyrics. I shall miss you very very very much.”

  2. The world has just become bit less colourful, raucous, and alive. But somehow I don’t think even her rest will be ‘peaceful’ – vibrant, challenging, witty, and irresistible yes, but ‘peaceful’? Never!

And on that day when the dead rise in glory, there’s no doubt there’ll be choirs and orchestras of incomprehensible beauty. But I’ll be heading for a small and sweaty bar where Poly & the rest of them will be on the bill, and laughing in between sets at how the hypocrisy they challenged is at last overthrown forever.

  3. RIP.

More meaningful to me, personally, Phoebe Snow died today, too. The Poetry Woman. RIP.
