At least 17 people have died in the small Brazilian town of Bandeira do Sul in Minas Gerais state, north of Rio de Janeiro, after a live power cable broke and fell into a crowd of people enjoying a pre-Carnival street party. Dozens of people were hurt, some seriously.
Police and demonstrators demanding political reform clashed in Oman on Sunday, killing two people, and protesters set government buildings and cars ablaze, witnesses said.

The Iranian opposition website Kaleme.com, which is close to opposition leader Mir Hossein Musavi, has reported that Musavi and reformist cleric Mehdi Karrubi are being held in a Tehran prison. The development comes ahead of opposition protests planned for March 1 in Tehran and other cities to demand the release of the two leaders. Their wives, Zahra Rahnavard and Fatemeh Karrubi, were also reportedly jailed.
Iran's chief prosecutor, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, was quoted as saying that "anyone who acts against the law will be dealt with."

North Korea has vowed to turn Seoul into a "sea of fire" in retaliation to a joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea. Tens of thousands of troops will take part in the joint drill later today, which the South says is an annual event and a necessary part of the country's defence. But the North says it is a pretext for an invasion and is warning it will respond with what it calls "relentless retaliation".

United Nations experts in the Ivory Coast capital, Yamoussoukro, came under fire as they were trying to investigate reports of a violation of the arms embargo imposed on the country, the global body says. They were looking into reports that Belarus had provided attack helicopters for supporters of Laurent Gbagbo, who refuses to give up the presidency.

He was the bishop who accepted me into the ordination process and was so supportive during the entire ordeal process.
