MADPRIEST’S THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

I find it easier to believe in one god than many coincidences. But, as I said yesterday, I'm a man of little faith.

  1. Yup.

I suppose there are lots of coincidences. But the idea that a set of them just happened to start this ball rolling is a bit much.

  2. I have said before that I think without personal immortality and a god validated reason for life, the universe and everything, then “misery, fear, confusion and depression” are valueless and ultimately, when erased by death, non-existent. Without god, those who persist in putting up with the uncomfortableness have only an atheistic stoicism to help them get through it all.

  3. Precisely.

But, more, only through the intervention of a vast and engaged intellect could such a complex creature as man that can comprehend misery, fear, confusion and depression exist. Animals can feel these things, but we have no reason to believe they can comprehend them, nor use them to launch themselves into deeper introspection or translate them into works of art. Mere necessity and mechanical evolution would’ve stopped at the level necessary for self-preservation, and, once the need was fulfilled driven by the “negative” feeling, it would be dropped and forgotten, except as, perhaps, instinct in similar situations.

I believe suffering doesn’t demonstrate God, but that our ability to suffer does.
