According to FR. Z'S blog the stole that the great ecumenist of our time, Benedict XVI, wore when he attended an Anglican service with the Archbishop of Canterbury in Westminster Abbey recently (see photo on left), originally belonged to Pope Leo XIII, who declared that Anglican ordinations, orders and priesthood, were invalid back in 1896.
As Fr. Zuhlsdorf points out,
"Benedict XVI teaches through signs. Signs point to deeper issues. Vestments are signs. In the person of Pope Benedict, Peter’s Successor came to Westminster. In Benedict, in a symbolic sense, Leo XIII came to Westminster as well."
So, there you have it. We now know exactly what he thinks of his number one fan, which is, to put it simply, "Archbishop? My arse!"
It also explains the rather unusual design of popemobile Benny chose for the occasion.
