SON OF AKINOLA – LET’S NOT DO THE OKOH NOKOH!

From THE EPISCOPAL NEWS SERVICE:

Anglican Archbishop Nicholas Okoh of Nigeria told reporters at a July 14 press conference that "same-sex marriage, pedophilia and all sexual pervasions [sic] should be roundly condemned."
Okoh was giving his maiden press conference about the state of the church and nation when he accused the "church in the West [for using] their money to spread the homosexual lifestyle in African societies and churches; after all Africa is poor."

He said western churches “are pursuing this agenda vigorously and what is more, they now have the support of the United Nations. We therefore call on parents to ensure that their children obtain their first degree in Nigeria before travelling abroad. Parents and guardians should closely watch and monitor the relationship which their children or wards keep so that deviant behavior could be timely corrected. The sin of homosexuality, it must be re-emphasized, destroyed the communities of Sodom and Gomorrah."

COMMENT: Well, I suggest that when this Biblically illiterate bigot eventually gets round to studying for his first degree in theology, he attends a university somewhere where there is at least some regard for academic integrity and for those embarrassing (for evangelicals) little things normal people call "facts."

  1. first degree in Nigeria…

all very well and good, but there is persistent corruption / extortion in a sector of the Nigerian university system. I don’t know how widespread it is, but even if the incidence is 5% of uni. faculties or campuses or dormitories, it’s a bad deal if you happen to be one of the students at the 5%.

I know several excellent graduates of the Nigerian medical education system, here in the US for post-graduate education. It’s just that the occasional reports of student gangs and such make it clear that not all students have an optimal environment.

  2. Now now, MP, I have it on good authority that he has earned least one degree in theology, but he won’t be able to receive it until the Church is willing to pay certain conferral fees, just a formality you understand.

Therefore, if you could just give the appropriate bank transfer numbers for the coffers to the Nigerian University listed below….

  3. It is some sort of achievement I suppose to pack as many bad pieces of reporting, logic, theology and outright dishonesty into two paragraphs. Do Guinness have a category for that in their records?

  4. Do Guinness have a category for that in their records?

Jim, that would be a hotly contested, extremely competitive category, methinks.

  5. I have a hunch that the average Nigerian Anglican might say, “Well, I don’t really understand about homosexuality, and I guess maybe it’s kind of icky or something, but what with poverty, corruption, and anti-Christian hostility from some of our Muslim fellow-citizens, the church in Nigeria really has more important things to worry about.”

  6. Cathy, I dunno, even for the holier-than-God, this is amazing stuff.

Fr. Bill, that stuff is trivial. It is the great conspiracy to force lesbians on poor suffering Africans that matters. Besides if they don’t have the West, gay men etc. to blame someone might notice how corrupt they are!

  7. “all sexual pervasions”

    If it’s a perversion, it’s certainly a pervasive one!

    @sshat.

  8. The sin of homosexuality, it must be re-emphasized, destroyed the communities of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

How retro of Okoh to trot out thattired ol’ twisting of Scripture for homophobic purposes. The moron!

  9. Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just being pervasive?

I really admire the way you can be as witty as this on a day such as you had yesterday, Mad Priest.

  10. It’s my ministry and I’m a professional.
Also, I’m English and you know what we’re like with graveyard humour. We are the world leaders when it comes to the inappropriate (although those New Zealanders are pretty good at it as well).

  11. It would appear that being an idiot is at the top of the required competancies for being the Archbishop of Nigeria.

And no I am not being disrespectful of the man. If anything I’m being disrespectful to idiots everywhere.

  12. LET’S NOT DO THE OKOH NOKOH!

I’ve had “The Locomotion” stuck in my head ever since seeing this. O_o

  13. “The sin of homosexuality, it must be re-emphasized, destroyed the communities of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Clearly this man hasn’t read the OT scripture, so I’m surprised he wants to “re-emphasize” his ignorance.

  14. Ironic, isn’t it, that if you actually *read* the Bible, it implies in more than one passage that Sodom, Gomorrah and their sister cities were destroyed for their inhospitability to strangers… yet that’s exactly the sin this fellow himself is committing.
