On the whole, OCICBW... has evolved in the directions its readership has taken it, in true emergent church fashion. But there have always been a few underlying themes that have informed it from the start that come from my own concerns. One of these is my disgust regarding dualism, the splitting of the created world and the spiritual world into two separate states of being. Personally, I hold this heresy to be the main cause of all of the nastier bigotries and hang ups the Church has given the world.
Therefore, Ascension Day is an important festival for me because it commemorates the Son of God, in the body of Christ, returning to God the Father. It wasn't some airy-fairy soul that ascended but the resurrection body, that Thomas had touched, that made the journey.
Although I am happy to use the word soul to describe the inner personality of creatures, I don't believe that we have something separate and spiritual within us that can leave the body and fly up to heaven after the body dies. I believe in the resurrection of the body and that alone. I think this is the correct Biblical view to take and the one most in line with Jewish and primitive Christian beliefs. The soul as a concept was something early Christian apologists stole from Greek thought and used to persuade Greeks to join the Church.
