BISHOP-SPEAK FOR BEGINNERS

From THE DAILY OBSERVER:

The bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Liberia, the Rt. Rev. Jonathan B.B. Hart, has urged Liberian youth to obey their parents and show respect to their elders, in order to inherit God's promise of long life.

TRANSLATION: "If you answer me back just once more I'm going to strangle you, so help me God!"

  1. I’m a little bit confused because the Bishop urges conformity (taking the elderly woman as an example) but the woman’s husband was a fighter for human rights and constitutional change.

    On occasions the husband lost his job as a teacher and was imprisoned. One presumes he was not respecting his elders, or those in power, at these times. Had he done so he could have kept his job and “human rights” could have gone to the back of the bus.

One of the ten suggestions is of course, “honor your father and your mother, that it may be well with you and you may live long upon the earth Back when I was a young Lutheran boy in parochial school, this was a favorite text for chapel at the beginning of the school year. I have heard some particularly bad sermons on this topic.

    The bishop is in a rather less than grand tradition.
