GOODBYE PORK PIE

The Anglican clergyman behind a controversial Christmas billboard of Joseph and Mary in bed is no longer Archdeacon of Auckland, but the city's Anglican Bishop denies he has been sacked.

Bishop John Paterson said Glynn Cardy's position was always going to come up for renewal in April and his departure had nothing to do with the billboard.

200 days off purgatory for the first person (or animal) to explain, correctly, why the above is one of MadPriest's cleverest headlines ever. An extra 100 days off if the explanation comes with the appropriate (by MadPriest's definition) amount of adulation.

  1. The phrase “goodbye pork pie” means “it’s all over”, so obviously this refers to the termination of this gentleman’s job.

However “pork pie” is also Cockney rhyming slang for a lie, which is what this gentleman’s boss has told about why he has lost his job (so it also means “a goodbye lie”).

If there is more to it than that, MP, let me know and I will think some more.

I can’t give you any adulation till I know if the above is right. (Well, and possibly not even then. I don’t need days off purgatory, after all, cos I’m pretty virtuous)

  2. ain’t seen it but it is described as a road film like Easy Rider, and I suppose the ex-Archdeacon is now on the road, as it were.

  3. NZ has come up with some stonkingly good films. Once Were Warriors springs to mind immediately, as does Heavenly Creatures, now criminally unavailable on DVD, even though it was directed by the beautiful Peter Jackson and stars Kate Winslet.

I will keep an eye out for Goodbye Pork Pie, MP, on your recommendation.

  4. WSJM – I’m in the UK though, sadly. I have got it on DVD, but it is rather old, and it’s a European DVD, from Holland, which my DVD machine doesn’t like and doesn’t play very well. Annoyingly.

  5. Cathy, I am very impressed. That is awesome. I don’t recall ever seeing one of MP’s obscure references ever being picked apart so brilliantly before. How’s that for adulation?

  6. And don’t miss The Simpsons’ version of Heavenly Creatures, either!

    “Now the adulation, please.”

    Cathy said…
    “oh feck off”

Cathy, I think I’m falling for you. 😉

  7. JCF – awwwwwww!!! You’ve made my day…

Renzmqt – well thank you kindly – sadly it just goes to show how much time I waste at work!

I did among other things wade my way through an entire song of completely bollocks Joni Mitchell lyrics to Charles Mingus’s Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, to see if there was some weird reference in there that MP was getting at, so as far as I am concerned MP owes me big time.
